Ok, I know I should have posted on Saturday after the race, and if not then, Sunday at least. But, I decided I needed a day or two to take it all in. I finished in just over 5 hours, and was last in my age group (something I didn’t want to be). But, the reality was, it was good just to finish, and sometimes, it’s not about the race, it’s about the challenge (thank you Tough Mudder).
That being said, I will say that Saturday was the most physically challenging thing I’ve ever done. It was cold, wet, and windy…the whole race. But, I intentionally tried to smile the whole time and keep a positive outlook. After all, I was there by my own choice, no one forced me to do it. I could quit anytime I wanted. But I didn’t want to…so why not be happy? So many other racers were cursing and grumbling about the rain, or this hill, or how the distance seemed farther than their GPS watch told them. But the reality was, we were all there by choice.
I think my favorite part was running alongside my mom for a few yards at one of the mile markers. She was so supportive. It was a much needed boost for me, since my recently-single lifestyle has left me without a cheering section.
It was equally great to see my son at the finish line and watch him run the last few yards with me. Someday when he’s older I hope he remembers his Dad and the day we crossed the finish line together.
